TBC Name That Kitty Contest Candidate Names

Following are the names that were submitted for our Name That Kitty Contest for our new male kitten, Code/Working Name: Dood.  We’ve had a lot of fun reading the names as they’ve come across our wires and then “test-driving” them in conversation / interactions with Dood … in some cases when we’ve used a suggested name he’s indicated that he knew we were speaking with him, specifically … those were pretty good moments 🙂

We’ll take the next few days to rinse through the names and select the one we think fits him best and that he (appears) to acknowledge / respond to.  We’ll post an announcement note to FB when we’ve selected his name and make arrangements to ship goodie packages … oh, didn’t we tell you?  Because of the better-than-anticipated participation, we’ve decided to award an extra goodie pack or two … or more 😉

Stay Tuned and thanks again for helping us find Dood’s correct name — we’ve had a GREAT time!  😉

btw, we reviewed submissions multiple times but please let me know if i’ve omitted one of your submissions and i’ll check my records and correct accordingly.

We are very, very sad

We are very sad to report that earlier today our very own TwoBigCats force-of-nature, Pepper (Do-You-Want-Her?)  passed due to complications of diabetes.

While we are sad at losing Pepper’s company and devotion, we are comforted that she is no longer in pain and that she passed peacefully in our arms, hearing our words of love for her.

Following are a few photos of Pepper we’ve taken over the 12+ years of her life … looking at them brings back Pep’s Living in the moment, Loving each day approach to life that we will miss so much.

Luv you, Pep!

pep_puppy_deck

This photo of Pepper was taken the week she came to live with us during the summer of 2002. She’d been found wandering in a neighborhood by a friend of ours; our friend’s owner-location efforts were fruitless so she called us to see if Penny needed a sister to play with … turns out that’s **just** what the doctor (Dr. Joanne, that is) ordered!

pep_j_hand

Joanne was trying to get something of a straightforward pic but, as we’d come to find out soon enough, Pep thought otherwise … hence Joanne’s hand trying to position her to …”stay. no, STAY …” that didn’t quite work out 😉

pepp_penny_futon

Here are Penny and her new best friend, Pepper, wrestling on the back porch futon soon after Pepper arrived.  I can’t begin to tell you how these two wrestled and played the hours away every.single.day … talk about hair on fire!

pep_pen_tug

What’d I tell ya? They were CONSTANTLY playing tug of war, chase (any and every thing, including one another) until they tuckered out and took a break.

pennytired_pep

See that look on Pepper’s face right there? That exact same “Let’s Get ‘Em”, enthusiastic look was present until just recently when her illnesses began sapping her energy … she was UHmazing. (Notice Penny’s got her head resting on the couch arm and her tongue sticking out? Pepper would run so fast and for so long that Penny – being a border collie was required by nature to try and herd Pep into submission – was often exhausted to the point of collapse.)

pep_penny'13

As the years went by, Pepper and Penny remained closer-than-close — one another’s shadows — until Penny’s passing in August of 2013. When Penny passed, it was for Pepper that we worried most … it was clear she was grieving deeply for Penny and was depressed … much as she was when her cat, Delilah, passed away in 2008.

pep_

Speaking of Dee, (Delilah) was our 2nd Maine Coon cat and for reasons unclear to us, Pepper and Dee were best friends, often found snuggling with one another around the house.  In the summer of 2008, Dee was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in one of her legs, which eventually led to the loss of her leg.

Pep_Dee_post-surgery

After Dee’s surgery and loss of leg, Pepper rarely left her side … nuzzling her inside whatever basket she happened to be laying in or just laying by Dee’s side, Pep’s devotion to Dee was very touching … nothing short of amazing.

For a short time after Pan passed in 2010, the TwoBigCats pack consisted of only Penny and Pepper … we were missing the feline element that had kept the house in balance. That’s where Cherry and Calvin came in.  I’d be lying if i told you otherwise, but Cherry & Cal didn’t bond closely with Penny & Pepper, though after Penny passed Cherry would occasionally rub muzzles with Pepper as they passed one another.

pep_cherry

In time, Cherry and Pepper would share afternoon treats in the kitchen or sunroom and would rest on adjoining couch cushions.  Cal, true to form, didn’t feel the urge to be close with Pep until after Cherry passed.  And as with each of her previous losses, Pepper gladly re-formed her pack around the remaining member … in this case, Cal.

pep_cal

In the time immediately following Cherry’s passing, it wasn’t unusual to find Cal and Pepper resting, just a few feet away from one another … seemingly content to share their space with another furry creature.

But it was for Joanne that Pepper saved her greatest devotion and love.  The two photos below only scratch the surface of how close they were … wherever Joanne was, Pepper had to be, too. Bed, kitchen, bathroom, couch, office … outside going for walks or working in the gardens, inside doing woodcarving … wherever Joanne was, Pepper just had to be … Pepper was without a doubt Joanne’s most devoted and protective canine companion. I loved seeing them together … just knowing how happy they were in one another’s company.

We are extremely grateful to have had 12 years of Pepper’s larger-than-life presence in our lives, but, truth is, her absence will be significant and our house and lives will take quite some time to feel “normal” again.

Name That Kitty contest has closed

The TwoBigCats Name That Kitty contest has closed and it looks like there were 70+ names submitted for consideration.  We’re putting the names in a spreadsheet and will post them NLT tomorrow (Monday) morning, select and announce a name by mid-week and ship a goodie pack out NLT friday.

THANKS SOOOOO MUCH to everyone who played along with us and submitted names … there are LOTS of excellent candidate names to choose from (which makes it all the more difficult to pick the **best** name) but we’ll get on it asap.

Thanks again to all who participated!

Name That Kitten Pics

Here are 3 quick collages i threw together. the new name recipient, a young gray / white male code name DOOD is a charming, inquisitive, playful and talkative 5 month old. in one of the collages is his sister, Bridgette … another charmer.

PLEASE NOTE: we are only soliciting a name for the male as we like the name Bridgette for his sister.

Enjoy!

ANNOUNCING: Name That TwoBigCats Kitten Contest

Dear Friends of TwoBigCats,

SHORT VERSION:

We’d like your help in choosing a name for our new male kitten. Visit our contact page to submit your suggested name for a chance to win a TwoBigCats Goodie Pack

HAL VERSION:

Just about five weeks ago our family was joined by two kittens … a very charming brother and sister.  As many people do, when the kittens came to live with us we tried using the names they’d been given when they were sheltered but, truth is, they just didn’t work for us … the names just didn’t “fit” them.

In fairly short order we selected a name for the female that fits her quite nicely — Bridgette! — but we are having a very challenging time picking a name for her brother and we clearly need an outsider’s perspective & help … so we’re holding a Name That TwoBigCats Kitten Contest   and we’d like you and your friends / family to suggest some names to us.  In return, the submitter of the chosen name will receive a TwoBigCats Goodie Pack filled with jams, jellies and honey from our trees and bees. (We hear from our friends around the planet that they LOVE our TBC goodies, so maybe you will, too. BTW, FYI & FWIW — everything we make we share on a friendship basis, we sell **nothing** and do not accept compensation in any way, shape or form for TBC Goodies.)

Tomorrow I’ll post a few pics of him along with some of his physical and personality characteristics and open the door for your suggested names for him. In the meantime, let’s just say he’s a warm, fun-loving, hair-on-fire kitten who is still a little bit shy but loves to snuggle … and EAT … OMG, CAN THIS GUY EAT!

In the meantime, entry submission guidelines are as follows

* The contest runs from september 26, 2014 – 11:50 PM october 4, 2014); we will select and announce his new name on wednesday, october 8, 2014.

* You may submit one name per day and your family / friends may submit names per the guidelines, too. (if you decide to tell others about the contest and they submit an entry, have them enter your name along with the suggested kitten name as we will award a Runner Up goodie pack, too … if your friend’s submission is chosen, you win, too. (if you are on FB, you may want to share this post to nudge them in the right direction 😉

* The first entry for a name is considered the only valid entry for that name; subsequent repeat entries will be discarded. (depending on volume of entries, i may / not notify repeat name submitters (?) of the elimination of their submission)

* Enter your submission by visiting the TBC contact page, completing and submitting the contact form. (PRIVACY NOTE: i will retain the information only as needed to select a name, then 100% of submission entries will be deleted from my system.)

* This is intended to be an informal and fun Friends of TwoBigCats “event” – there is no cash equivalent, no alternate prize, no nothing … nada, zip, zilch, zero … it’s something we’re doing to share with our friends the goodies we make from our fruit trees.

There are probably LOTS OF DISCLAIMERS and OTHER RULES / INFO i should be posting there, but this is the gist of it:

LET’S HAVE SOME FUN and name our newest TwoBigCat!

We look forward to receiving your entries 🙂

all the best,
hal & joanne

We are sad

We learned today that our good friend, Ellen, yesterday lost her companion cat, Gizmo.

Ellen and Gizmo had been together eighteen and a half years!

Giz had survived a number of not-insignificant illnesses these past few years and on the occasions that we visited with him / looked after him, he was always a sweetie … always.

We send our best TwoBigCats Good Vibes to Ellen and her household … and we’ll always fondly remember Giz sitting in the sunshine on the kitchen counter, waiting to be fed and then receive a head pat / massage.

Penny, Penny, Penny!!!

That was how we called Penny when she was out roaming the back yard … “Penny, Penny, Penny!!!” and she’d come running (or ambling) to the back door … what a hoot to see her around the back yard and then make a bee line to us 🙂

So it’s with a mixture of smiles and great memories of her that we acknowledge today as the one year anniversary of her passing.  Our memories of her remain strong … her in the den, on her bed or couch; parked under the coffee table in the front room; her doing that little “front leg hop-up” that she’d do when she wanted to get close to you and have a hug (or a treat 😉

Luv you, Penny, Penny, Penny!!!

Catching up re CherryBerry life celebration

By the calendar it was a month today that we lost Cherry.  As you know, losing such a close creature family member is brutal … so we’re doing our best – and managing to a certain extent – to adjust to her absence.  Over the course of the past week I’ve spent several full+ days locating, rinsing through and selecting the photos and videos I want to include in a Life Celebration for her. And as much as I’ve LOVED seeing all the photos and videos (and remembering / savoring the moments when I took them) it’s been a far more emotionally draining than I was expecting … so the full celebration post / page will have to wait until I am able to complete it properly.

In the meantime, I’m readying a couple of videos that I’m sure you’ll love:

This first one is of Joanne giving Cherry a CatWash — Joanne’s name for a rough and tumble  body massage that Cherry absolutely loved receiving … in fact, she would approach Joanne at least once each day — often several times a day — asking for her CatWash.

Cherry CatWash video

This second video is very near and dear to me: It’s of Cherry asking me to tuck her in or take a nap with her.  Cherry usually went through this each day after lunch, a routine that started not long after she and Cal came to live here, when I was having a series of surgeries and using daily naps as recovery time; she also did this every.single.night. as a means of directing me to bed at 9PM.

Cherry: Please tuck me in to bed

We have soooo many wonderful things to show and tell you about Cherry, but life being what it is, it’ll take me a bit longer to make them available.

Cherry Carroll, one of the sweetest cat I’ve ever known 🙂

Thinking of Cherry

I’m slowly locating and selecting images and videos of CherryBerry to share with you; truth is, while i LOVE seeing them all … it’s still very painful to acknowledge she’s that she’s no longer here.

sigh.

Here’s a pic I took of her “helping” me mow the lawn 🙂
